The name Chris Moneymaker is famous throughout the poker world. He is the champion of the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event, and helped launch poker to a new level of popularity with his Cinderella story. He paid $39 to get into the $10,000 buy-in event and after battling some of the toughest poker pros walked away a the winner.

Chris Moneymaker was born on November 21, 1975 in Atlanta, Georgia. He worked as an accountant and was making $40,000 a year in his current hometown of Nashville, TN when he embarked on his journey to fame.
Chris started playing poker thanks to the movie “Rounders.” Chris played poker with his friends and started playing online so that he would have more opportunities to play. On a whim, he paid $39 to enter World Series of Poker Main Event satellite. Chris won that satellite and advanced to the satellite which would send him to the WSOP if he won. Chris did win and began packing for Las Vegas.
Chris Moneymaker entered the tournament with only one modest goal, to survive the first day. After a first day in which Chris Moneymaker’s chip stack maintained a healthy size and grew from there, Chris changed his goal. Now, he wanted to make the money. Chris met this goal as well, and now his goal was to win the whole thing. Chris Moneymaker met Sam Farha in heads-up play and thanks to some good timing and an excellent bluff, Chris Moneymaker became the 2003 World Series of Poker Main Event Champion and won $2.5 million.
Chris Moneymaker soon quit his job to become a professional poker player and supplemented his poker income by becoming a spokesperson for PokerStars, adding more fuel to the poker explosion.
