Doyle Brunson is the most famous player in the poker world. In 2007, Doyle has ahd moderate success, finishing 6th in the WSOP $10,000 Pot Limit Omaha event and 2nd in the $5000 HORSE event.
Doyle Brunson was born in Longworth, Texas on August 10, 1933. He was destined for great things growing up, but fate intervened to change his destiny. Doyle was an athlete, and he excelled in both basketball and track. He excelled so much as an athlete that he was signed by the Minneapolis Lakers of the NBA. Fate crashed into this destiny when Doyle broke his leg while working at a factory during preseason for the Lakers. Because of his injury Doyle couldn’t play basketball any longer and he never played for the Lakers. To this day, Doyle still needs a crutch on occasion due to the injury.
Doyle Brunson became a poker player after his injury, traveling around Texas with his friend, Dwayne Hamilton. As they moved across Texas, they met Amarillo Slim and Sailor Roberts. All four players joined together and formed a group known as the “Texas Rounders.” The Texas Rounders journeyed across Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana, winning whatever poker games they could find. They did get robbed and beat up from time to time, but that was one of the dangers inherent in their chosen profession. After a while, Dwayne Hamilton left the group to return to Fort Worth. The remaining three, Doyle, Amarillo Slim, and Sailor Roberts, traveled to Las Vegas, and there, lost everything. The Texas Rounders broke up and went their own separate ways.
Doyle Brunson was married in 1962, but was diagnosed with cancer later that year. The doctors said the cancer would kill him, but they performed an operation on Doyle so that he could survive long enough to see his child born. After they performed the operation, the cancer was gone. Fate had once again intervened in Doyle Brunson’s destiny.
Doyle Brunson is a two-time champion of the World Series of Poker Main Event, and has won 10 total WSOP bracelet, one short of the record owned by Phil Hellmuth and tied with Johnny Chan for second place. Doyle was the first player to win more than $1 million in tournament winnings. He also has two poker hands named after him 10-2 offsuit and A-Q. Doyle Brunson won both of his WSOP Main Event victories with 10-2, but he doesn’t want to be remembered for winning with such a bad hand. A-Q is named after Doyle because he said that he NEVER plays A-Q. Unfortunately for him, with televised poker and recorded hole cards, Doyle’s statement has been proven to be a complete fabrication.
Doyle Brunson wrote Super System and Super System II, which are considered to be “poker bibles.” They hold detailed information about many different poker games and are useful for any player who wants to improve their game. Todd Brunson, Doyle’s son, has followed in his father’s footsteps, becoming a professional poker player. Todd has won a WSOP bracelet, making Doyle and Todd the first father-son combination to win WSOP bracelets.
